The dome reflects in the still water at dawn, and the colonnade's columns create deep repeating frames. It remains one of the most photographed structures in the city.

The Palace does not need me to defend it. Everyone with a camera in this city has stood at the west bank of the lagoon and made the reflection photograph, and the reason is simple - it works. The dome doubles in the water, the columns repeat themselves in a rhythm that Beaux-Arts architects understood better than almost anyone since, and the whole composition resolves in the viewfinder without much effort. The question is what you do once you have made that image. I keep coming back before sunrise, when the water has not yet been touched by wind and the walkways are genuinely empty, because the second photograph is the one that interests me. The colonnade in low sun becomes a study in repetition and shadow - the deep gaps between columns, the ornamental urns catching first light, the friezes reading in relief the way they cannot at midday. I like to work at the base of the columns looking up, where the scale flattens the sky and the structure becomes almost abstract. By nine the wedding parties begin arriving, and the light goes flat, and the swans stop caring about anyone. That is the day's window closing. In winter it opens later and the fog sometimes stays low against the dome in a way that makes the whole thing feel unmoored from the city around it. Those mornings are worth the cold.

Twin Peaks

Two grassy summits near the geographic center of the city that rise over 900 feet, giving a panoramic view straight down Market Street to the Bay Bridge and the downtown skyline.
