A Civil War-era brick fort tucked directly beneath the south anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge, where the span's arch sweeps overhead at its most dramatic angle. Waves crash on the seawall, the bridge's underside reveals its riveted steel, and the roof deck looks straight across the strait to the Marin Headlands. It is the classic upward view of the bridge, and the surf here draws local photographers in winter swells.

The bridge does not look like itself from here. From every other vantage in the city it is a silhouette, a shape on a horizon, a postcard. From Fort Point it is a machine. You stand at the base of the south tower and look straight up into the ribs and rivets of the underside, and the scale becomes something your body understands rather than your eye. The arch sweeps out over the brick of the fort in a geometry that feels almost accidental, as if the engineers had draped the span across whatever was already there and let it settle. I come in winter, when the swells are up and the seawall gets pounded. The light in late afternoon warms the east face of the bridge to a color that photographs will always slightly fail to render, and if the fog is behaving, it will sit just above the deck and drift through the cables in a way that turns the whole structure soft. Long exposures work here. So do wider frames that include the brick of the fort in the lower corner, giving the bridge something human-scaled to lean against. The crowds are real but they thin quickly once the sun drops. Most people leave when the golden hour ends. That is when I usually start paying closer attention. Blue hour under the bridge is a different photograph entirely, colder and stranger, the steel going almost black against a sky that has not quite given up. Watch the water. The sneaker waves are not a rumor. I have been soaked here more than once and I have learned to keep one eye on the seawall and one on the light, and to trust that both will do something worth watching.
