A rugged coastal trail along the city's northwest corner, passing the concrete ruins of a Victorian-era bathhouse that once held seven saltwater pools. Cypress-framed viewpoints look across the mouth of the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge, and at low tide the ruins fill with reflecting pools. The Mile Rock Beach spur and the hidden labyrinth add lower vantage points.

Practical Tips

Sunset backlights the ruins and the bridge appears in soft light from the Lands End Lookout. The trail down to the baths is uneven and the rocks are slippery when wet; stay off the seawall in high surf. Parking at the Lands End Lookout fills quickly on weekends.

Author's Comments

There is a particular hour in late October when the fog has pulled back just enough to let the bridge appear in silhouette, and the ruins below fill with the last warm light of the day. That is the Lands End I keep photographing. The concrete foundations of the Sutro Baths hold seawater in shallow rectangles after a low tide, and if you time it right, the pools go mirror-flat and catch the sky in pieces. Seven pools once. Now geometry and salt. I usually start at the Lands End Lookout and walk the trail west before dropping down to the baths. The cypress frame the bridge in a way that feels almost deliberate, as if someone planted them for the photograph, and there is a bench along the upper trail where I have sat through more sunsets than I can count. The light here is Pacific light, cooler and more silver than what you get on the bay side of the city, and it does something specific to the cypress bark and the weathered concrete that I have not found anywhere else in the region. The spur down to Mile Rock Beach is worth the extra thirty minutes if the tide is out. From the sand you get a lower angle on the ruins and the coastline curves back toward you in a way it does not from above. The labyrinth is further along, on a bluff most visitors walk past without noticing, and I will not tell you exactly where because part of the point is finding it. Come on a weekday if you can. Come in winter after a storm has cleared. The air is scrubbed clean and the bridge stands sharp against a sky that has forgotten how to hold haze.

Waves crash on the seawall, the bridge's underside reveals its riveted steel, and the roof deck looks straight across the strait to the Marin Headlands.
