Worth the Alarm: 6 Bay Area Sunrises

First light over the water and the hills

Sunrise is when the bay is at its most private, the water flat, the joggers few, the light coming up soft over the East Bay hills. I face east for these, out to the shorelines and summits where dawn arrives clean. Set the alarm. The bay you meet at first light is not the one everyone else sees.

  1. A gravel levee trail curves through low marsh grass beside a calm blue wetland, with the bay stretching to the right under a clear sky. Distant hills and a few small birds or white markers line the horizon in soft late-day light.

    Baylands Nature Preserve

    The boardwalks reach out over the marsh toward the Diablo range, and dawn sets the sloughs on fire. Birds lift off the mud at first light. Come in the still air before the wind picks up.

    A low bayside path that opens east across the water to the sunrise. Easy to reach, calm at that hour. Watch the light climb over the far hills.

  5. A moss-draped creek slips through a rocky ravine, with smooth long-exposure water flowing past boulders and under a low stone overhang. Bright green moss blankets the curved branch-like rocks, giving the winter scene a lush, shaded look.

    Mill Valley

    Mount Tamalpais East Peak

    From the summit the whole bay lies below and the sun comes up over the Diablo range beyond it. On a fog morning you are above a glowing sea. Drive up in the dark and be ready.

    The east-facing hills catch the dawn early, the oaks throwing long shadows down the grass. A brisk climb warms you against the morning chill. The south bay spreads out gold below.
