Hosting for the Holidays: 7 Places That Never Miss

Where to point the out-of-town crowd

When family comes in December, you want the places that deliver without a hike or a gamble, the ones that make the Bay Area look like itself. This is my short list for visitors, an easy day of bridge views, redwoods, and old stone that photographs well for everyone, camera or phone.

  1. Wide coastal panorama of the Marin Headlands above Rodeo Beach, with sunlit brown hills rolling down to a deep blue bay. The shoreline curves past the beach and low red-roofed buildings, while thin fog hangs along the distant ridgeline under a clear sky.

    Sausalito

    Marin Headlands - Battery Spencer

    The bridge shot everyone wants, towers and city stacked behind. Go early or late to miss the worst of the crowd. It never fails to land.

  2. A wooden boardwalk curves through a lush redwood grove beside Redwood Creek, with dense green ferns and understory plants filling the foreground. Visitors walk under the tall, shadowed trees, and a small bridge crosses the creek in the background.

    Mill Valley

    Muir Woods National Monument

    The old-growth redwoods hush everyone the moment they step in. Reserve parking ahead in the busy season. Soft even light on the trunks all day.

  3. An Amtrak California train in blue, gray, and yellow rolls through Jack London Square on tracks set into a quiet street, framed by leafy trees and low waterfront buildings. Bright sunlight and a clear blue sky give the scene a crisp midday look.

    Jack London Square

    The Oakland waterfront, easy and lively, with the estuary and the boats and good food close at hand. Blue hour along the water is the picture. Something for everyone in the group.

  4. A wide view of Sausalito Yacht Harbor shows rows of moored sailboats and yachts beside a dark timber dock, with a bright red tugboat near the end of the pier. Calm gray-green water stretches toward the hazy bay and distant hills under a partly cloudy morning sky.

    A postcard bay town with the city glittering across the water at dusk. Walk the boardwalk and let the reflections do the work. Warm light off the Marin hills late in the day.

Sunlight washes the busy pedestrian street, packed with visitors against the layered ride structures and playful seaside architecture.

    The old boardwalk and its 1920s coaster are pure nostalgia against the sea. The lights come on at dusk for a carnival glow. Fun even when the crowd is thick.

    A modern cathedral of glass and wood where the light pours down the great veiled window. Look up and shoot the geometry. Quiet and warm on a cold day.

  7. Sunlit rear view of Filoli’s red-brick Georgian Revival mansion, with long rows of arched windows and chimneys above a neatly trimmed formal lawn. Sculpted shrubs, climbing ivy, and a few low garden benches create a symmetrical, well-kept estate scene under a clear blue morning sky.

    The grand estate goes full holiday in December, decked and lit through the house and grounds. An easy, elegant outing for visitors. Book ahead, the season sells out.
