Napa and Sonoma when the light matters more than the tasting

You can do wine country for the wine, or you can do it for the light, the long rows running to a vanishing point, the balloons going up at dawn, the old plaza towns holding their shade. I go north for the second kind of day. Early is everything up here, before the heat and the traffic.

    The balloons lift off at first light while the valley is still cool and blue, and there is no better moment to be standing among the vines. Watch them rise against the eastern hills. You will be up before dawn; it is worth it.
