The Bay in Its Best Hour: 6 Spots for Golden Light

Where the last warm light lands longest

The bay has a particular gold to it in the last hour, softer than the desert, cut with the cool of the water. I chase it to the same handful of places, the ones where the light stays a few minutes longer than it should. Go early, stay late, and let the crowd thin around you.

  1. People stand and climb across the sunlit volcanic boulders at Indian Rock Park, with rough gray stone filling the frame and carved steps leading up to the peak. The bright blue sky and open composition emphasize the rocky summit and its rugged texture.

    Berkeley

    Indian Rock Park

    Climb the rock at dusk and half of Berkeley does the same, and for good reason. The Golden Gate sits dead center in the sunset from up here. Bring friends and a bottle of something.

  2. Tall Monterey cypress trees form a dramatic tunnel over a straight dirt road, their trunks and branches arching overhead into a cathedral-like canopy. Warm morning light filters through the leaves and stripes the path, with a white building framed at the far end.

    The tunnel of Monterey cypress runs straight toward the low sun, and for a few minutes the light pours down the whole corridor. A tripod and a small aperture hold the depth. Wait for a gap in the visitors for a clean frame.

  3. Rocky tan cliffs covered with patches of green and red coastal scrub stretch along the Sonoma shoreline, meeting deep blue Pacific water below. White surf breaks around dark offshore rocks under a clear, pale blue sky.

    Bodega Head

    Out on the headland the light comes in sideways off the open Pacific and the cliffs go warm and textured. Watch for whales in the spring on the same trip. The wind is real, brace the camera.

  4. A winding paved trail cuts through sunlit grassy hills toward the large Stanford Dish radio telescope on the right, with a few walkers scattered along the path. Low golden light casts long shadows across the rolling landscape under a clear blue sky.

    The oak-dotted hills above Stanford glow at the end of the day, the great white antenna catching the last of it. An easy loop, best walked with the sun at your back.

  5. A wide view of Sausalito Yacht Harbor shows rows of moored sailboats and yachts beside a dark timber dock, with a bright red tugboat near the end of the pier. Calm gray-green water stretches toward the hazy bay and distant hills under a partly cloudy morning sky.

    As the sun drops behind the Marin hills the bay turns to hammered brass and the city lights come up across the water. Work the reflections along the boardwalk. Stay for the blue hour that follows.

    The lake holds the sky, and at golden hour the sailboats and the reeds go copper against still water. A calm, unhurried place to end a day. Look for the mirror in the early evening.
